In keeping with our efforts to offer the community opportunities to learn about new and emerging technologies, the Wilmington Memorial Library has a 3 D printer available with the following guidelines for its use.

  • The Library’s 3D printer is a that can make simple three dimensional objects in plastic using a design that is uploaded from a digital file.
  • The Library’s 3D printers may be used only for lawful purposes. The public will not be permitted to use the Library’s 3D printers to create material that is:
    • Prohibited by local, state or federal law.
Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others. (Such use may violate the terms of use of the manufacturer.)
    • Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the Library environment.
    • In violation of another’s intellectual property rights. For example, the printers will not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent or trademark protection.
  • The Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.
  • There is no charge for printing jobs that take less than two hours to print. However, there will be a charge for printing more complex objects that take two hours or longer to print. The cost will be $0.25 per 15 minutes beyond the two hour free period of printing.

Design Creation

A file is obtained from a 3D Printing Object repository, such as, http://www.thingiverse.com/ or by creating a design using computer assisted design (CAD) software.
All files for using the 3 D printer require the following:

  • The file needs to be either in .stl or .obj format.
  • The object in the file should be 6 cubic inches or less.
  • An object that will take more than 2 hours to print needs to be preapproved.

Using the 3D Printer

The 3D Printer is located on the first floor near the public computers. To use the 3D Printer, patrons need to check in at the Information Desk and will be given the laptop to use with the 3D Printer. Patrons who are unfamiliar with how to use a 3D Printer will need to sign up for a Tech Help session prior to using the 3D Printer.
