Here are some interesting info and stats on the platforms we talked about.

Facebook

  • Created (FaceSmash) in 2003 by not just Mark Zuckerberg but also, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughs.
  • First, only students from Harvard could join, then expanded to any school with a mail server, then expanded to companies, finally, in 2006, to anyone. (source: https://www.britannica.com/topic/Facebook)

  • Hashtags not used
  • Only platform with quizzes and games.
  • Offers people and places profile pages and groups.
  • Big trouble with interference with politics and propagating fake news

Twitter

  • Created in March of 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass, and Evan Williams.

  • Most followers: Obama with 113 million (source: https://learn.g2.com/most-followed-twitter-accounts)
  • Smaller amount of info posts
    • Bonus FfT = the original limit of 140 characters -was due to on early cell phones limits
  • No quizzes/games/group (though you can create your own lists)
  • Used by journalists/activists to break news, on global, national, and local levels
  • Hashtags are useful here, too.
  • Used by scammers and, well, Russians.
    • Bots, or software that acts as a real person, are used for this.

Instagram

  • Created in October of 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger

  • Most followers: Cristiano Ronaldo with over 205 million (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instagram)
  • Pictures only
  • Hashtags more useful/important than Facebook (though it is owned by Facebook)
  • No quizzes/games/groups
  • Can only add content through the app (not the website)
  • Not a big source of scams but since Facebook bought, the ads have increased tremendously.

YouTube

  • Created in 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim.

  • There are 2 billion monthly active users
  • One billion hours of YouTube content viewed per day
  • 500 hours of content uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • 250 million hours of YouTube viewed per day on TV screens (source: https://www.businessofapps.com/data/youtube-statistics/)
  • Tread carefully on the comments!
  • Anyone can upload videos, including things like old sporting events, movies, concerts. However, if that person doesn’t hold the copyright, it’ll will be taken down.

SoundCloud

  • Created in 2007 by Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss
  • Has 175 million active monthly users
  • Has 320 million users

  • Audio only
  • Is the only one of these platforms developed outside of the US; it was developed in Germany.
